Work Experience FAQs

Work Experience FAQs

  1. Who can apply for a Work Experience Placement?

Any local unemployed person can apply for a work experience placement. We aim to give experience to anyone who needs it. Any age group can apply for the positions unless stated otherwise in the advert.

  1. Will I be paid?

Short answer is NO. Work experience placements are generally not paid. It is a way for someone who is unemployed and looking for work to gain experience. It will also mean that you will receive a reference at the end of the placement which you can use when seeking future work.

  1. Will it affect my ability to claim Jobseekers Allowance?

If you are claiming Jobseekers Allowance you are able to do a work experience placement for between 2-8 weeks for 25-30 hours a week and still receive your payments. Please discuss longer placements with your Job Centre Advisor. Whilst you are on the placement you must still attend interviews that are required of you, at BTG we will make time for you to do this as long as you let us know. Please also speak to your advisor regarding travel expenses.

  1. How can I apply for a work experience placement?

If you are interested in any of the placements BTG are advertising then you will need to send us your CV along with a covering letter about the placement you are seeking to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . We will get back to you as quickly as possible to arrange to meet and to talk about the placement etc.

  1. How will I know if I have been accepted onto a work experience placement?

After you have applied we will then contact you back and arrange to meet you. We will then discuss what the position involves and see how we can work with you.

  1. Do I need to pay for a DBS check

At BTG we would not expect you to have to have a DBS check unless you are going to be left alone full-time with a vulnerable person. So we will not be requiring you to undertake a DBS check. If you already have a DBS check though, it would be useful to know so we can also help you with your future work opportunities.

  1. Do I need to sign a contract?

You do not need to sign a contract. We will discuss and agree with you what experience you will gain during the placement. Any work experience placement is an informal agreement that can be broken with 24 hours’ notice by either BTG or yourself.

  1. What will I have to show for my work experience once I have completed the placement?

At BTG we will write you a reference that can be used when seeking future work. We will also work with you to help you find paid employment, or further work experience work.

  1. Commitment

Although the work experience placement is an informal arrangement, you will be expected to turn up to your work at the designated time and be committed to learn and obey all the rule and regulations in regards to any work environment.

If you are unable to attend at any time, through illness, any emergency etc, you will be expected to inform BTG by telephone as quickly as possible, as you would expect to do if you were at a normal working environment.
